What are the reasons for the failure of rubber seals used in rubber gaskets?
Release time:2023-3-27  Views:408

Today, Wuxi Ruike Machinery Parts Co., Ltd. brings us the question of what causes the failure of rubber seals used in rubber gaskets.

In the application of rubber seals, rubber gaskets are often used. Their lifespan is generally divided into long, medium, and short. What are the factors that affect the lifespan of rubber gaskets, and what are the reasons for their failure? Let Tekway share with you! With the proper selection of rubber gaskets, their lifespan can reach medium to long. In this case, the main reasons for gasket failure are aging of the rubber material or wear of the gasket lip. For gaskets with a lifespan of less than 100 hours, failure is usually due to improper selection of sealing structure, elastomer, or surface roughness of the shaft.

Main factors affecting the failure of rubber seals

(1) Type selection and installation quality

Improper type selection and the use of unqualified gaskets (such as poor lip quality, partial deformation, hardening; rusted self-tightening springs, and unqualified dimensions) often result in gasket failure. Additionally, forced installation can cause partial deformation of the gasket and scratching of the sealing surface by burrs on sharp edges such as splines and threads, leading to sealing failure.

(2) Improper oil selection and contamination

Improper oil selection mainly manifests in poor compatibility with the rubber gasket. If the oil used has poor compatibility with the gasket, it will accelerate the deterioration of the rubber, aging of the gasket, and the formation of insoluble oil sludge, which will accelerate the wear of the gasket and cause sealing failure. Therefore, attention should be paid to the compatibility with rubber materials when selecting oil.

(3) Poor gasket management

The chemical composition of rubber gaskets determines that storage and handling must comply with specified requirements. Investigations have found that improper handling, storage, and transportation of rubber gaskets are the main factors that cause early gasket failure. Therefore, it is necessary to pay attention to the daily management of rubber gaskets.

Other factors

(1) Operating temperature and environmental conditions

(2) Air dissolved in the system

The O-ring is installed in a groove. It is a moderately compressed O-shaped seal. It can be used as a fluid seal for various fluids such as oil, water, air, and certain gases. There are two main types of application methods: static and dynamic. Below, Tekway will introduce the performance of the O-ring!

The sealing part has a simple structure, the installation part is compact, and the weight is light.

It has a self-sealing effect, and often only one seal is needed to achieve the sealing effect.

Good sealing performance. When used as a fixed seal, there is almost no leakage. When used as a dynamic seal, leakage only occurs at higher speeds.

The moving friction resistance is small, and it can also adapt to pressure exchange occasions.

The dimensions and grooves have been standardized, the cost is low, the product is easy to obtain, and easy to use and purchase.
